Wel­come to 31 days of Social Media. Geez, that sounds like a a very bor­ing 101 class. Let’s try that again.

Ahem…

Ok every­one, includ­ing the Geico cave­men, knows about social media, but are we doing it right? Are we doing it wrong? Who cares? Ha, well, if you’ve ever encoun­tered a catty per­son online then you have an opin­ion about it.

Social media is any type of medium used to social­ize. That doesn’t nec­es­sar­ily mean con­sid­er­ate social­iza­tion with man­ners. A few months ago 20/20 did a story on bul­ly­ing. The spe­cial­ist they were inter­view­ing said some­thing basic and bottom-lined, yet very pro­found, “Kids aren’t being taught how to be kind any more.” There is no com­pas­sion or just good will. If adults lead by exam­ple then you can see what we’re teach­ing the next generation.

Please don’t get me wrong. There are some great fam­i­lies try­ing to teach their kids the right morals and are doing a fab­u­lous job. It’s just unfor­tu­nate that there are more that aren’t teach­ing or lead­ing prop­erly. We, as adults, need to remem­ber OUR man­ners and remem­ber to respect oth­ers with­out feel­ing over Beaver Clever-ish.

So for the next 31 days I’m going to touch on the var­i­ous aspects of using Social Media in a way that encour­ages and influ­ences oth­ers. I hope you’ll join me every day and also add your thoughts in the comments.
