Raised Bed Gardens

My lemon cucumber sprout!

This year we are trying our hands out on raised bed gardens. We’ve had plenty of experience with the good, old-fashioned regular garden beds and we had a great crop last year. We’ve been interested in the raised bed’s for awhile but some friends showed us Len’s Raised Bed Gardens and we loved the idea. (Our friends’ tomato plants were so big, they looked like trees!)

So this year we went all in and are giving it a go. We made a 4x16 bed; built 2 cinder blocks high. I can’t believe how many things we were able to plant!

Beefsteak tomatoes
Carrots
White Cobbler Potatoes
Lettuce
Onions
Jalapenos
Green Beans
Strawberries
Watermelons
Cucumbers
Lemon Cucumbers
Basil

It’s only been 1 week and we already have a lemon cucumber sprout! I was so excited when I saw it that I’m sure I scared the hoo-haw out of the neighbors! I’ve never tasted, let alone heard of a lemon cucumber so I can’t wait to experiment with them!

We’re still maintaining the regular garden over at my mum’s. In that garden we planted:

Tomatoes
Cucumber
Eggplants
Onions
Chinese Cabbage
Chinese Radishes
Beets
Green Beans
Okra

I’m anxious to see the differences (if any) between the two gardens.

Are you guys planting anything? If so, what? I’m always intrigued the different things that people like to grow personally.

@Jenny86753oh9 I’m so sorry we didn’t get to see each other. Things got chaotic and I just couldn’t manage. :( Maybe next time.

Nice depth of field on the sprout pic. :p

I’m green that ya’ll are so… green. I am going to grow some dandelions inside in a pot for the guinea pigs. I imagine it will be VERY easy. I’m getting the seeds for free from the lawn.

  6. I am a huge garden nut! I did a bunch of planters last year, only to have our lawn maintenance guy (yes, im THAT lazy) weed whack them all to death. Funny thing was, the strawberries we planted had sprouted and kept growing. And the next week, the dude chopped em down.

Anyway — i share your excitement. It’s SO much fun when you create something, even if mother nature did all the work.
I’ve never had a lemon cucumber either! Please, do blog about it :)
